Christian Education for Over 25 Years
In the summer of 1980, a group of CCO staff (Coalition for Christian Outreach) began discussing the possibility of forming a Christian day school. Their desire was to create an urban school with an economically and racially diverse student population. As one part of achieving this goal, they chose to offer need-based scholarships.
Our First Day of School, September 14, 1981
Pittsburgh Urban Christian School opened its doors on September 14, 1981 with one Kindergarten class with five students.Mrs. Marcia Merryman was the teacher. As a matter of fact, Mrs. Merryman is still our Kindergarten teacher and she continues to bless and nurture our youngest students.
Our school was located at Fourth Presbyterian Church.
By 1983, there were 20 students in grades K - 3, three teachers, a part-time administrator and an Arts Consultant.
In 1984, to accommodate growing enrollment, PUCS moved to the Boy's Club of America building in Shadyside. The Boy's Club building provided access to three large classrooms and a gym.
By the time PUCS moved to its current location in 1987, there was a Kindergarten class and
grades 1 - 5.
In the fall of 2000, PUCS added a 6th grade. The next year, 7th and 8th grades were added and our middle school was established.
In 2004, through the generosity of many PUCS friends and donors, we purchased the church facility. In 2006, building renovations started to create a new entrance and office space plus two additional classrooms.
These updates are just one step in the process of revitalizing the school building to better serve our students.
